The V-9 U-9 Digital Portfolio is a collaboration between Indian artists and artists from the United Kingdom. The Portfolio was cruated by PROOF, V-6 Artists and Publishers UK and Sushma Bahl Independent Art Consultant, India. The theme of the portfolio is Identity. The participating artists created collage work which was scanned at V-6 Studios, Cardiff School of Art and Design. The prints are actual size and are printed on an Epson 7800 using Somerset Enhanced paper and Ultra Chrome inks.

Nine artists from Britain and nine artists from India have collaborated on a Digital Research Project based in the Cardiff School of Art and Design, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. The project was initiated by PROOF (V-6) the Printmaking research group, during the spring of 2004. Organization and planning meetings were held with our Indian partners, Sushma Bahl (Formerly Head of Arts and Culture for the British Council, India) and Sunaina Anand (curator of Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi). Plans were developed for the project involving artists from both countries with widely varied backgrounds and experiences. The participating artists were working in some aspect of digital media, or conversely had little or no experience with computer-based art works but were interested in exploring the artistic potential of digital media.

For the Indian artists participating in the project the process of exchange and development of the work is as important as the resulting exhibition of their original collages and high quality digital prints which they have specially created for this project. The networking, sharing of artistic concerns and exchange of ideas and images involved in the project is an important opportunity, which the participating artists value greatly.

The “collage original” was considered to be the most creative and efficient way to begin the digital portfolio project. The eighteen artists were asked to create collages using traditional materials with the theme of identity. This collection of original work was scanned and proofed via high quality inkjet machinery in the printmaking studios in Cardiff. Each work is actual size and is printed on special coated fine art paper using archival inks. The digital prints in this portfolio will are editioned in small numbers, i.e. no more than 20 of each, plus artists proofs.
